There are three video lessons in this course:
Lesson 1) Alfaia technique. If you’ve never played an alfaia before or if you’re just starting and struggling with the technique, this video lesson is essential for you. This lesson covers how to balance the drum on your leg, how to hold the stick and the left arm technique used by manay traditional maracatu groups in Brazil. This is your foundation…start here!
Lesson 2) This is the most basic and essential maracatu groove to learn before going any further with this music. We will cover Baque de Marcação which is a common groove played by almost every traditional maracatu group in Brazil. There are exercises and transcriptions to help you along.
Lesson 3) This lesson covers the “bridge” which is a rhythmic cadence used to delineate the form of a song or arrangement. This is a very important part of the maracatu alfaia vocabulary. We will isolate the “bridge” pattern and then play an example of using the bridge with Baque de Marcação.
